Federal grant supports seniors’ exercise program
WINNIPEG, MB – Everyone can benefit from a wellness plan that includes a physical exercise program. With this in mind and help from a grant from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, The Salvation Army’s Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre is set to launch Healthy Connections, a weekly exercise social program.
With a threefold aim of connecting seniors with their health, connecting them with their bodies and connecting them with each other, the program is slated to begin this month.
The $12,155 startup grant will be used to purchase necessary program materials such as free weights and resistance bands for use by the participants and to build a storage area for the equipment. Also on the shopping list is a digital music player and dock with speakers, so the workouts can be more fun and invigorating with a soundtrack of music!
Delivering the good news on behalf of the Government of Canada was the Honourable Shelly Glover, Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface, and a long time supporter of The Salvation Army Centre in her constituency. She stopped in to visit during the Seniors Tuesday AM Recreation Spot (STARS) program, made a short presentation and then took questions from the assembled seniors.
The Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre exists to encourage the individuals, families and multi-cultural St. Vital community to positively believe in their abilities.
