CARTIER, MB – Three days after the Manitoba Government declared a Provincial State of Emergency, Canadian Forces Members are working tirelessly to assist against property and environmental damage from flooding from the Assiniboine River in the Rural Municipality of Cartier.

Among those who answered the call to come to the aid of the affected homeowners is Master Corporal Mackenzie Chornawka of 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI).  He and his fellow soldiers have diked over a dozen houses in the area so far since being mobilized on the weekend.

On hand lending support to the flood-fighting cause are The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services volunteers Jo Vanderhorst and Adrian Kelly.  These retired firefighters arrived Monday morning in the Salvation Army Community Response Vehicle and immediately began distributing food, drinks and snacks to the workers.  Sandwiches, homemade soup, granola bars, fresh fruit, water and sports drinks were among the items on the menu to help fuel the dike builders.

In this one day, The Salvation Army fed nearly 200 grateful volunteers and military personnel.  MCpl Chornawka explained between spoonfuls of soup, “we appreciate the outpouring of support from Manitobans.”

The Salvation Army and its volunteers are committed to providing continued support as required during this time of need.
