By a show of hands, it became obvious that many of the 240 guests that attended the Army’s 5TH annual Hope in the City Breakfast in Barrie (November 12) have made this event an annual Christmas tradition of their own. They are marking the start of Christmas by helping The Salvation Army kick-off its annual Christmas Kettle Campaign, while enjoying festive music by My Favourite Strings jazz trio, and sipping piping hot apple cider.

Master of Ceremonies, Jeff Robertson (Area Director, Public Relations and Development) used his humour and passion for the Army to weave the programme together.  His Worship, Mayor Jeff Lehman, City of Barrie brought greetings and heartfelt appreciation for the work of The Salvation Army.

A highlight of the event was the address by guest speaker Joe Roberts, the Skid Row CEO.  His story of drug abuse, homelessness and  the ultimate renewal of mind, body and soul brought guests to their feet, and tears to their eyes.

The Salvation Army took the opportunity to award Advisory Board Life memberships to two individuals who have given exemplary service to the Barrie Advisory Board for 15 years each.  Mr Harry Magill and Mr Ted Handy were both honoured by the surprise that morning.

The event also launched the Army’s 2014 Christmas Kettle Appeal with the first donations given by the morning’s guests.

Special thanks were given to the event sponsors, Canaan Contracting; Life 100.3 FM; Liberty North; County of Simcoe; KICX 106; and The Dock.
