During the Christmas season, we see many in our community take time out of their busy holiday schedule to help those in need. Sometimes this involves volunteering time, sometimes it involves making a donation, and sometimes it involves thinking outside the box to make the help those who need it most.

This year, an 11-year-old Barrington, NS, reminded us that even the smallest among us can have a great impact.

Nathaniel wanted to do something positive in his community last Christmas and help The Salvation Army provide gifts to families in need. Together with his parents and his friend, Dallas, Nathaniel made 148 reindeer candy canes and sold them at a local craft fair.

His fundraising efforts were so successful that Nathaniel sold out of his sweet decorations before the end of the show.

With the money raised, Nathaniel purchased items to be distributed through The Salvation Army Christmas support in the Barrington area. Some of the gifts Nathaniel picked out included a remote control car with batteries, a personal hygiene kit for a teenage boy and a pair of diamond earrings.

The news of Nathaniel’s hard work came to Majors Peter and Janice Rowe in a letter found in one of their kettles.

“This letter showed up on my desk, and I was just amazed when I read it,” says Major Janice, Corps Officer at Yarmouth Community Church. “It’s incredible that this young boy would do this and be so aware of the need in his community. It really is the true meaning of Christmas.”

    Thank-you, Nathaniel.
