Doreen Keizer is not an employee at Sunset Lodge in Vic-West, but she’s been working at the complex care residence each week for the past 22 years. Doreen is 65, and one of hundreds of volunteers with The Salvation Army in Greater Victoria.

Why does Doreen volunteer?

“I get back so much more than I can ever give through volunteering”, she says; “I learn new things everyday from the people I help and work with. Volunteering gives me a sense of fulfillment in my life.”

Why Sunset Lodge?

“I receive more love from the residents at Sunset Lodge than anyone could ever imagine. The residents are my special friends and some have become like family to me. I have learned a lot about life and courage and how to grow old gracefully from them. I also admire the staff and leadership team at Sunset Lodge. They’re a group of hardworking and caring people, who know that respect and compassion are the way of all things there,” she says.

Over her 22 years of volunteering, Doreen has seen many changes take place at Sunset Lodge, as well as many friends come and go. In fact, Doreen has been volunteering at Sunset Lodge for almost as long as the Lodge has been in operation-this year the Lodge will celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Doreen is just one of the many hundred appreciated volunteers that support The Salvation Army’s work in Victoria. There are over 50,000 Salvation Army volunteers throughout the country.
