Fort McMurray wildfire 2016

Fort McMurray Community Continues to Support One Another

It has been one year since the wildfire called ‘The Beast’ raged through Fort McMurray burning 5,000 square kilometres, destroying 2,400 structures, and leaving thousands homeless.

Much has changed in Fort McMurray since the entire city was evacuated. Roughly 15,000 people have not returned to the community and for those who have returned, the psychological impacts of going through such a traumatic event are still being felt.

“There’s still a lot of anxiety, there’s still a lot of stress and high emotions,” […]

Kettle Volunteer Transforms into Santa During Campaign

“Lo and behold, I lucked out.” That’s how Gabe Bakos explains what followed after his wife, Linda, suggested that he volunteer at The Salvation Army Christmas Kettles.

Linda’s family had a long tradition within The Salvation Army church. When Gabe married her almost four years ago, he says he knew, as do most people, about the kettles and the shelter. But he admits he had no idea there was a church, let alone children’s camps, an international disaster response team, community […]

One Amazing Christmas Kettle Shift

Cathie Hays admits she wasn’t expecting much that day when she showed up for her shift at The Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle inside a suburban mall. She had been a kettle volunteer for about five years and she knew that this particular location wasn’t one of the busiest. She resigned herself to a slow few hours.

“I’m one of those people who always says God has His plan,” Cathie explains. “And I didn’t know The Salvation Army Band was coming in […]

Kettle Campaigner: Making a Difference

By her own admission, Jacci Bibeau is one fussy volunteer. “I do a lot of research before I do anything. I have to know it’s making a difference and that the money goes where it’s supposed to go."

The Salvation Army passed Bibeau’s scrutiny with flying colours, but that’s not the only factor that keeps her at her station five days a week during the Christmas Kettle Campaign. “I enjoy it. I love talking to people. I heard some incredible stories […]

Calgary Stampeders Help Distribute Donated Coats

Calgary Stampeders fan favourites Brandon Smith and Drew Tate were kept busy at The Salvation Army Coat Drive Distribution Day on November 8. The two acted as personal shoppers by helping families pick out coats and other necessities to get them through the cold winter. Mittens, scarves, hats, and even pajamas were also available for anyone needing some extra warmth this winter.

Hundreds of Calgarians attended the family coat distribution to receive one of the 5000 winter and summer […]

Divisional COmmander, Major Ron Cartmell

A Letter Of Thanks From Our Divisional Commander

The gifts have been opened, the table has been cleared and for some it comes with a sigh of contentment and for those who have been caught up in the busyness of the season, it is a well- deserved sigh of relief that it is over. For more people than we like to think about there is a sigh of despair as the next year is contemplated.

Retail sales are up and UPS gave late delivery because they grossly underestimated the […]

New Paved Walking Path Gives More Freedom To Grace Manor Residents

It’s been an exciting August at The Salvation Army Grace Manor senior’s home in Edmonton. The residents now have a brand new, paved walking path that stretches 400 metres around the outside of their building. Now any resident, regardless of mobility level, will have access to fresh air and exercise on a safe, solid surface.

On opening day, Erna Zigash and some friends took their walkers out for a spin on the new path and had a great time. “This is […]

Thrift Store Customers Donate $11K to Pine Lake Camp

During the month of May, Thrift Store customers across Alberta donated over $11K to help send kids to The Salvation Army Pine Lake Camp. For families struggling to make ends meet, the cost of summer camps is something they just can’t afford. Donations like this make camp a reality for many children who would not otherwise get to go.

“We would like to thank all of the Thrift Store customers who contributed to this donation,” said Captain Ian Gillingham, Divisional Youth Secretary. […]

Kettle Volunteers Make Year-Round Programs Possible

Edmonton’s 2014 Christmas Kettle Campaign saw well over 300 volunteers ring the bells at 42 kettle locations across the city, bringing in $520,000 for The Salvation Army’s Community & Family Services (CFS)! Even though we did not reach our $545,000 goal this year, we will still be able to provide year-round programs and services at CFS, including emergency food, clothing, toys, counselling, hot meals, senior’s programs, camps for kids, and more, throughout the next year.

To thank all the wonderful people who […]

Easing Burdens at Christmas a Priority

What do parents do when they aren’t able to put food on the table, or provide presents at Christmas? Hundreds of Edmontonians faced this burden over the Christmas season, but our Community & Family Services were able to help, thanks to your generosity. Through services such as our Gift Room, where parents can choose gifts for their children, and struggling seniors and individuals can pick up necessities like mitts, scarves, or a coat, you helped us provide hope and dignity […]
