WINNIPEG, MB – Colourful balls whiz through the air in every direction until the sound of a low thump signals that another dodgeball player has been retired from the game and must sit and join her friends who have also been eliminated.  These are the sights and sounds of childhood being transformed into memories for campers attending KidsQuest Day Camp at The Salvation Army's Southlands Community Church in Winnipeg.

Each year, The Salvation Army Thrift Store invites their guests, supporters and corporate donors to "Send a Kid to Camp" with proceeds from the initiative benefiting camps in the local community.  This year's campaign ran for six weeks in April and May and raised a total of $106,580.25 nationally, helping to send 484 children to camp for a week this summer.

In Winnipeg this year, the seven Thrift Store locations worked together to raise enough to send close to 75 children to camp.  Besides Southlands, campers attended at Camp Weetamah, Camp Heritage Park and Beaver Creek Camp.

"The weekly program includes creative activities, indoor and outdoor activities, and the first sports week is offered in partnership with Athletes in Action, who bring professional coaching in basketball, soccer and volleyball," Corps Officer/Pastor Captain Peter van Duinen explained of Camp at Southlands, "On the creative side, there are Bible stories, singing, water activities and games – a wide variety of activities."

Day camp registrations at Southlands numbered 130 campers.  Twenty-three Leaders In Training have put in over 2,200 volunteer hours, helping in activity leadership and support, as well as having their own learning program for leadership development.

Cheques were presented as well to the Salvation Army Day Camps at Weetamah Corps and Heritage Park Temple.
