October 5th, 2011 marked the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Cedar Place Cèdre in Sudbury, Ontario.

The shelter for women and families in crisis is housed in a 12 bedroom, 20 bed capacity home that provides sleeping accommodation, meals and support. Renovations, painting, and cleaning took place over the summer and were paid for with private donations along with funds raised at the Sudbury Santa Shuffle.

The Salvation Amy has been providing shelter for homeless women and families in Sudbury since 2007 using a local motel. An average of 25 people a night are using this service. Families with older children and/or a male family member will continue to be placed at the motel. Single women and women with small children will be housed at the shelter.

The new shelter will better enable staff to meet the client on a more intimate and consistent basis.

The easy part about providing sheltering services is the accommodation and food whereas the more difficult aspect is to meet the client where they are in their lives and then help them move forward in a positive manner.

It is our hope and prayer that every person who walks through the doors at Cedar Place Cèdre will be met with dignity and respect, and will find the resources necessary to move forward to the next step in their lives.
