What are high school students in the city occupied with these days? Student’s Christmas Rush for Oodles and Oodles of Goodies, etc. (SCROOGE)!
Youth For Christ (YFC), overseers of the Operation SCROOGE, hosted a kick-off luncheon for student and teacher campaign organizers from 12 different secondary schools in London. At the luncheon meeting, students received information about hunger in London and how their campaign efforts support The Salvation Army Food Bank for several months after Christmas. They were also given fun ideas of how to excite the student body to action, and were challenged to make 2011 the best year for SCROOGE collections ever. YFC Senior Advisor Mr. Bob Black presented this information with excitement and conviction.
Operation SCROOGE turns 41 years old in 2011. In the last 5 years alone, the campaign has collected over 500,000 cans of food. Last year, 14,578 students collected approximately 75,000 cans, helping 4577 people in need. When students go door to door asking the public for donations of cans and other non-perishable food items, please give generously.
What a great opportunity for local students to be aware of the needs around them and take action to help alleviate those needs. Thank you to YFC for facilitating such a wonderful campaign.
