What started as a Penny Drive, expanded into a nearly two-decade partnership of dedication and support. Since 1999, KICX 106 FM in Orillia, Ontario has championed alongside The Salvation Army in the mission to end poverty and homelessness. For years, loyal listeners, community members and even local schools gathered together to raise money for The Salvation Army in Orillia, Barrie and Midland. Thanks to KICX’s continuous support and generosity, they have raised over $100,000 but their efforts don’t just end there. Through various campaigns and radiothons, the team at KICX 106 has brought attention to the realities of hidden poverty to thousands of listeners.

Jack Latimer, Program Director and Morning Show Announcer, has been an integral part of KICX 106 and one of the many driving forces behind the station’s support of The Salvation Army. As his retirement approached, The Salvation Army visited the station to present KICX 106 with a Thank You Certificate.  “It’s truly a team effort and it’s amazing that we are able to help those less fortunate in the community,” says Latimer. As the Penny Drive ended, KICX 106 began their Feeding Families Auction in support of The Salvation Army. “We are committed to making sure that everyone in Simcoe County has a Merry Christmas and our Feeding Families Auction gives listeners a chance to take part in giving back to the community,” Carey Moran, Morning Show and News Announcer explained, “All too often we think of The Salvation Army just at Christmas time but they are there year-round, reaching out and helping those in need. What we do is just a small part”.

When asked why KICX 106 chose to support The Salvation Army, Mora Austin, General Manager and Vice President responded saying, “They serve marginalized people. Whether it is a hot meal or a shelter bed they make sure that everyone is able to access their services. They do so much in our community and the need is always growing”.

“The Salvation Army values its partnership with KICX 106”, says Jeffrey Robertson, Salvation Army Spokesperson.  “KICX is a home-town business that cares about its community and works diligently to help make it great.  They want to make life a bit easier for those in need, and they call on their loyal listeners to help them.  I appreciate the kindness of the staff at KICX 106, and I always look forward to visiting when I can”.
