On this cold and brisk morning, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie, raised the Red Shield flag of The Salvation Army and proclaimed December 11-17 as Salvation Army Week.

With a brass ensemble playing Christmas Carols near the flag pole, Mayor Lehman encouraged residents of Barrie to dig deep and support the Army’s Christmas campaign.  He then read this proclamation to those in attendance:

WHEREAS; The Salvation Army is the largest non-governmental provider of social services in Canada, providing food, clothing and shelter to those who need it most. Each year, The Salvation Army looks after the needs of 400 Canadian communities and helps more than 1.9 million Canadians; and

WHEREAS; Through its shelter program, community meals, life-skills training, pastoral care, emergency services and the provision of practical assistance,  The Salvation Army in Barrie provides much needed help and hope to our most vulnerable members of society; and

WHEREAS; Its annual Christmas Kettle campaign seeks to raise funds for its social programs and hundreds of bell ringers will ring their bells and collect donations throughout our great City of Barrie.  The goal of this year’s campaign is to raise $505,000.

THEREFORE, I, Mayor Jeff Lehman, on behalf of Barrie City Council, do hereby proclaim December 11 to December 17, 2017 as “Salvation Army Week” in the City of Barrie and encourage everyone to support The Salvation Army during this holiday season.

Salvation Army spokesperson, Jeffrey Robertson, spoke of the strong partnership The Salvation Army has with the City of Barrie, commenting, “we are incredibly grateful for the kindness and support shown by the citizens of Barrie.  They continually step up to ensure that our work can make a lasting difference in the lives of so many, and I have no doubt that this year’s campaign will also be successful.”
