This year marks the 28th anniversary of the tragic deaths of 14 young women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. To commemorate these women, December 6th has been named the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada. In honour of this day, The Salvation Army hosted a reception at Queen’s Park focusing on our work for women across the country and raising awareness of gender-based violence.

The reception highlighted many of The Salvation Army’s programs and services that provide compassionate and unconditional support to help women get back on their feet. One of which was the Evangeline Residence, the second largest women’s shelter in the City of Toronto. From nutritious meals, supportive counseling to medical assistance, the residence is safe and supportive space that empowers and gives hope to women. The reception also focused on other shelters such as, The Salvation Army Florence Booth House which is a 60-bed emergency women shelter that offers a wide range of services such as life skills programs and addictions counselling.

As the room filled, Salvation Army members met with local Members of the Provincial Parliament to discuss the daily realities of violence towards women in our society. The reception posed as a great opportunity to raise awareness and to remember all the women who have been affected by discrimination and violence.

Funding for these programs are crucial to help prevent and end violence against women and girls in Canada and worldwide.
