Leading by example in our community

To continue to do the work that we do, it is imperative that we connect with our community, raise funds and re-invest them back into our programs and services throughout the Maritime provinces.

This sixth annual event will bring together approximately 400 business and community leaders for a morning of networking, entertainment and education, all in support of the work that The Salvation Army is doing right here in the Maritimes.

Keynote Speaker: Darby Allen

Known as the face of the Alberta wildfires—and widely celebrated as a national hero—Darby Allen is an exemplar of selfless courage and level-headedness under pressure.

Allen was Regional Fire Chief of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, an area that encompasses the community of Fort McMurray.

Fire Chief (Ret’d) shares his story of leadership, team-building, and courage under fire at the 2018 Hope in the City Leadership Breakfast.

In spring 2016, he spearheaded the evacuation of the city’s entire population while the rest of the world watched. Throughout the ensuing weeks of operations, he worked tirelessly with first responders and volunteers, who came from across the nation (and globe) to assist.

His updates to the media were not only a means of reliable information, but a source of optimism—Allen provided calm reassurance as the lead spokesperson throughout the rescue efforts.

A native of Birmingham, England, where he worked as a firefighter for the Hampshire Fire Brigade, Allen emigrated to Canada in 1990.

He began work as a firefighter with the Calgary Fire Department in 1992, moving up in rank from Training Officer to Assistant Deputy Chief of Operations, before moving on to Fort McMurray Fire Service in 2009, where he became Regional Fire Chief in 2013.

The Salvation Army is pleased to present Darby Allen at the 2018 Hope in the City Leadership Breakfast.

Emcee: Steve Murphy

Originally from Saint John, N.B., Murphy has been a fixture of news broadcasting in the Maritimes for a more than three decades. After beginning his career in radio, he has worked on-air at CTV Atlantic since 1986, first as the host of Live at 5 before moving to anchor the newsdesk in 1993.

He has chaired the Christmas Daddies Fundraising Association for 16 years, in addition to hosting the Christmas Daddies annual telethon for an incredible 32 years. As the charity designated to distribute all Christmas Daddies funds to those in need, The Salvation Army has had the pleasure of working closely with Murphy in the past.
