Over 50 collective years of voluntarism

A combination of over 50 years of valuable voluntarism has meant support to nearly 200 individuals each year through the Halifax Centre of Hope’s Income Tax Clinics.

Malcom Blayne has been volunteering at the Centre of Hope Income Tax Clinics for over 20 years when they were created by Hiram Tiller who still volunteers today. Working for the a federal telecommunications company for 30 plus years, Malcom decided to make a career change and go to work for H&R Block. His time with the company involved transitioning income tax returns from paper to electronic. A few years later, he decided to retire and begin volunteering for The Salvation Army along with the Woodlawn Library to help those living on low or fixed incomes during income tax time get the most out of their tax returns.

Malcom says, “I enjoy helping those who are unable to complete their income tax requirements themselves. It’s a rewarding experience to be able to give back to the community I have lived in for many years.”

John Mersereau has eight years of volunteer service with The Salvation Army’s income tax clinics; he also lends his expertise to three local libraries along with the Society of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Nova Scotians. Prior to retiring, John worked with the provincial government as an Economist for over 30 years. At the Centre of Hope, he feels he is contributing to a great cause. He enjoys connecting with those who come in for support along with the other volunteers.

“This work keeps me grounded in my awareness of those who are living in poverty and their life challenges,” says John. He adds, “Income tax is tied into all that we do; my hope is that those we have seen in the past will be able to leap forward and no longer require these services.”

At the Halifax Centre of Hope, clinics are taking place on Thursdays, March 15, 29 and April 12 and 26 from 1 to 4:00 p.m. at 2038 Gottingen Street by appointment only. Please contact Doreen at 902.422.1598, ext 226.
