Dr. Samantha Nutt, founder and Executive Director of War Child Canada, visited Halifax today to support The Salvation Army at its fourth annual Hope in the City Leadership Breakfast. The event drew over 300 business people to the Westin Nova Scotian’s Commonwealth Ballroom, for a morning of networking, entertainment and education about the work The Salvation Army is doing in Halifax.

Dr. Nutt is a medical doctor and founder and Executive Director of War Child Canada. Committed to peace, human rights and social justice, her humanitarian work has benefited thousands of war-affected children globally. With more than 15 years of experience working in war zones, Dr. Nutt has been at the front line of many of the world’s major crises – from Iraq to Afghanistan, Somalia to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone to Darfur, Sudan. She has been named one of Canada’s 25 Transformational Canadians by the Globe and Mail, has been appointed to the Order Of Canada, and the World Economic Forum has recognized her as one of 200 young global leaders.

“The Salvation Army has been a vital part of our social fabric for over 150 years; by bringing helplessness to hope, addiction to recovery and violence to security., “ says Dr. Nutt. “There is never a failure of opportunity for us to affect the lives of others. Not everyone’s lives have been defined by education and a healthy family life. Some people’s lives are filled with mental health issues, homelessness and abuse. It is these people that The Salvation Army helps every day.”

“What a wonderful morning to celebrate our Hope in the City Leadership Breakfast,” says Major Alison Cowling, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army. “Dr. Nutt has delivered a speech to inspire action globally and in our own community. With your support, you are helping us continue to provide the basic necessities of life – food, shelter and clothing – to those in need.”

The event also featured CTV news anchor Steve Murphy as emcee.

The Hope in the City Leadership Breakfast was made possible thanks to the support of: Presenting Sponsor Nova Scotia Power, Silver Sponsors CIBC Wood-Gundy, Investors Group, and McInnis Cooper as well as our media sponsors C100 and Metro Halifax.
