The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services team from Halifax honed their skills on Friday, May 13, participating in Exercise Scotian Pearl, a government-coordinated training scenario.

The Exercise, held at Shannon Park in Dartmouth, simulated chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear emergencies. The coordinated response involved all three levels of government, police, fire, emergency medical services and military personnel.

For its part, EDS set up two sites, a mobile canteen and a fixed feeding site at the staging area. Throughout the day-long event, the sites served around 180 meals and 300 snacks to first responders and volunteers.

Designed to enable government departments and non-government organizations an opportunity to safely practice their emergency protocols and procedures, the long-term hope for the event was to help keep Nova Scotians safe in challenging circumstances.

“Exercises like this provide all of us with an opportunity to sharpen our skills and improve co-ordination so we can respond rapidly to emergencies,” Ross Landry, Nova Scotia’s Minister of Justice, said in a release.
