August 31st marked the occasion of Majors Larry and Velma Martin being installed as the new Divisional Leaders for The Salvation Army, British Columbia Division at a celebratory ceremony taking place at Camp Sunrise in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast.

Major Martin will be responsible for all of the operations of The Salvation Army throughout the province while being a strong advocate for life-long learning in its many forms including formal education, disciplined reading, targeted conference participation, coaching relationships and networking, with that, he will inevitably bring with him a breadth of experience and leadership. Prior to this adventure, the Martins have made stops in Parry Sound, Ont., London, England, Hamilton, Calgary, Corner Brook, N.L., Regina and a previous stop in Halifax – where they built the church in Fairview around 20 years ago.

The Martins were installed by Commissioners Brian and Rosalie Peddle, Territorial leaders of The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda. The Salvation Army has been serving in communities across British Columbia since the 1880′s meeting a myriad of needs as they have emerged and evolved, always being blessed with great leaders and leadership teams.  Major Martin is the 24th senior officer to be appointed to the role of Divisional Commander in British Columbia

Major Martin shares, “British Columbia is another very beautiful region of the country. It can match the Maritimes in terms of beauty for sure. We’ve been to British Columbia a number of times, so we’re familiar with a certain amount of that province. We have a good staff there. Well trained, experienced people that will work with us.”

The afternoon also included musical samplings from the band, Divisional greetings from representatives for soldiers, officers as well as advisory board members, including Ron McLaughlin from Vancouver and Barbara Housser from Victoria.

We look forward to all that’s to come under the leadership of Majors Larry and Velma Martin!
