The 2011 West Kootenay BC Senior Games were a tremendous success as hosted by Castlegar, Nelson and Trail.  The event begun with the lighting of the ceremonial torch in front of a gathering of athletes, community volunteers, municipal leaders, citizens and supporters.

The games are made up of 20 plus events from slopitch to golf and dragon boat racing to cribbage held from Aug 16th – 20th, featuring competitive sports and activities for healthy BC residents aged 55 and older.

Opening ceremonies were held Wednesday at Haley Park in Warfield while the provincial event closed Saturday in Castlegar at the Sports Complex with the final ceremonies.

The Salvation Army was proud to be a contributing partner to the games by supplying provisions for volunteer and VIP lounges along with offering delicious snacks and lunches in Trail at the archery field as supplied by Kelowna EDS.

The games offer older British Columbians a chance to compete and socialize through sport.  All those who participated truly inspired active lifestyles and healthy living.  BC Seniors Games Society president, June Parsons, added “The BC Seniors Games are a wonderful tradition in British Columbia. Senior athletes compete with such enthusiasm. In addition, they showcase that age is not a deterrent to living an active, healthy lifestyle in the community.”

Attracting 3,100 participants, the event drew people from across BC for an extended stay in the region.  Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister, Ida Chong, shared “Seniors play a key role in helping B.C. families and communities stay connected. The BC Seniors Games offer a great way to recognize active, healthy seniors for their invaluable contributions to the quality of life in British Columbia.”

Congratulations to all participants and we look forward to seeing you next year in host city, Burnaby for the 2012 BC Senior Games!
