January 10, 2013 – Halifax, NS: The Salvation Army Thrift Store located in south end Halifax at 5280 Green Street reopened its doors yesterday after being closed for two months due to smoke and water damage caused by a fire at the restaurant adjacent to the store.

The Thrift Store is still undergoing some renovations and has cordoned off a temporary space of approximately 5,800 sq. ft. where customers can now shop for gently-used items including clothing, housewares, electronics, furniture and other household goods.

“We are just ecstatic to finally be open for business and to have our staff back at work,” said Barbara Warren, Retail District Manager for Nova Scotia Thrift Stores.

“Since the closure we’ve received countless calls and emails from residents asking when the store would reopen so we know folks will be very happy to hear the good news. There’s still more work to do to get the store back to normal but we’re very close to having full use of our space once again.”

Warren said the support received from residents and nearby businesses to help the Thrift Store recover product damaged in the fire has been amazing.

“Last month, the Sobey’s in our plaza hosted a donation drive on our behalf and collected enough donations to fill a transport truck. As well, many residents have dropped off donations on-site,” said Warren.

“Those donations helped us to restock the shelves and clothing racks so we’re very grateful to the residents of Halifax South for their support, she said.

Warren added that the store’s closure from the end of October through the Christmas season meant a loss of sales used to support local Salvation Army social programs so the Thrift Store is eager to begin making up for the revenue shortfall.

The Halifax South Thrift Store accepts donations daily during regular store hours.

Store hours are:

Monday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Saturday – 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Sunday – Closed
