The number of people who have died in the worst Ebola outbreak in history has risen to more than 930. Since its initial outbreak that first began in Guinea in March 2014, the virus has spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory shares a partnership with Liberia and Sierra Leone, carrying out its mission of hope, healing and transformation.

In response to the outbreak The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory is providing:

  • sanitizer, chlorine and other chemicals;
  • gloves, mouth guards and safety buckets;
  • food items such as beans, rice and cooking oil;
  • protective wear for approximately 200 medical professionals working with Ebola patients.

“As a result of the outbreak of the Ebola virus, lots of people are leaving the country and offices and businesses are closing,” says a Salvation Army member who lives in Liberia. “Everyone is so scared. There is no one to trust because we don’t know who has the virus and who doesn’t. There is no food. How are we to survive when those places we get our necessities from are closed?”

It is estimated that 2,000 men, 3,000 women and 1,000 children will be helped through the support provided by The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda.
