The Community Service Worker provides leadership of community based ministry programs in accordance with Salvation Army mission, values and standards. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Ensures that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is exemplified in the performance of all job responsibilities and through personal example.
  • Plans, prepares and leads effective Community Ministry based programs to make a positive impact on community
  • Ensures ministry and program objectives are consistently accomplished and that a spiritual focus is applied to all programs.
  • Prays with and shares the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with clients, other staff and volunteers, as appropriate (including linking individuals to Corps family and church programs where possible)
  • Interviews clients and assesses each client’s needs, recommends programs and services to the clients, provides Salvation Army programs to the clients and refers the clients, when necessary, to other agencies
  • Serves clients for food bank
  • Develops strategies and recommendations for program improvements
  • Tracks stats for CMS.
  • Assists with ongoing strategic planning to ensure Community Ministry based programs reflect community needs as they evolve in our changing socioeconomic climate.
  • Provides input in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for Community Ministry based programs
  • Networks with Salvation Army and community social service providers to improve programs and avoid duplication as required.
  • May provide transportation for programs as required.
  • Attends regular staff meetings.
  • Good team player.
  • Serves actively as a member of the Corps Leadership Team.
  • Gives oversight to the Community Ministries Team.



  • Gives oversight to Community based Ministry Programs, ensuring ministry objectives are consistently accomplished and that a spiritual focus is applied to all program initiatives.
  • Develops strategies and recommendations for staff and volunteer development.
  • Assists with recruitment, orientation, performance management of staff.
  • Assists with ongoing strategic planning to ensure Community based Ministry Programs reflect the community needs.
  • May provide visibility for The Salvation Army within the community through service club/social agencies participation.
  • Coordinates the implementing of new program plans such as, but not limited to Alpha, Messy Church, and VBS during spring break/fall break, Parents and Tots Group/Baby Song, Ready to Serve, Family Friendly Movie Night, Seasonal Celebrations (Easter/Thanksgiving/Christmas), Kids Summer Camps, Sports Outreach for Teens, among others based on community needs.
  • Attend regular staff meetings.
  • Some evenings and weekends will be required (include Sunday so that a community worker presents at church on Sundays so that any new people a community worker contacts during the week will see a familiar face when they come to the Corps on Sunday.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • A minimum of 2 years of Community College/Bible College or equivalent
  • Must be able to adhere to Salvation Army policies and principles
  • Special Certifications: Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
  • Excellent verbal, written and oral communication skills
  • Provide a successful Criminal Record Check and clear Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Have own transportation, provide a copy of Driver’s License & current Driver’s Abstract
  • Proficient with Excel, MSWord, Publisher, Power Point and social media
  • Understanding and support of the mission and standards of The Salvation Army
  • Organized and detail oriented.
  • Excellent people skills, a team player and have a desire to be involved in the Christian Ministry
  • Willingness to wear Salvation Army identification
  • Related work experience would be an asset ( Microsoft Office)
