Description

The Salvation Army’s Public Relations and Development Department, are seeking a Charitable Gift Advisor. This full-time position will be responsible for identifying, establishing, and maintaining the philanthropic and sponsorship activities of the Development office in Calgary, as well as ongoing cultivation and stewardship of relationships with current individual donors and community partners.

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Charitable Gift Advisor is highly organized and able to manage and prioritize a caseload to meet department objectives. The ideal candidate is mature and able to handle situations with exceptional tact and diplomacy. The Charitable Gift Advisor is polished and confident with the ability to work successfully in a diverse stakeholder environment.

Responsibilities

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Charitable Gift Advisor will be responsible for cultivating and stewarding an established major gift and legacy giving portfolio, while continually seeking prospects to help build and strengthen The Salvation Army’s development program. The Charitable Gift Advisor will handle prospective donors through the entire pipeline from identification through to stewardship while tracking their activity through the Raiser’s Edge database. The successful candidate will have a proven record of achieving or exceeding activity and fundraising targets.

SPECIFIC DUTIES 

Facilitate the current Major Gift/Legacy donor program:

  • Assist in the development of the goals and strategies;
  • Meet regularly with donors; this may require working some evenings and weekends;
  • On a monthly basis, track and report on your progress;
  • Use Raiser’s Edge to track all donor activity and proposals;
  • Maintain donor files;
  • Produce materials and tools to communicate regularly with current donors;
  • Identify and implement opportunities for donor recognition, stewardship, and appreciation;                                

Solicit large gifts

  • Initiate contact and meet with existing and potential donors;
  • Move potential donors toward solicitation and closure;
  • Make solicitations.  

Build and cultivate a list of prospects  

  • Identify, research, and qualify prospective donors;
  • Develop & manage a portfolio of prospects for cultivation and solicitation;
  • Regularly meet with prospects; this may require working some evenings and weekends;
  • Track and cultivate prospective donors using the Raiser’s Edge database;
  • Move prospective donors through the donor funnel with the end result of securing them as ongoing, regular supporters.  

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Attend meetings, and serve on committees and councils, as assigned by the Director of Development;
  • Participate actively in staff meetings and retreats;
  • Research, develop, present and follow up on any major gift funding proposals as required;
  • Assist with the developing of budgets, reports, statistics, and information necessary for a fair evaluation of the Public Relations and Development Department;
  • Represent the organization positively in public at all times by acting as a professional representative and ambassador;
  • Assist as required to prepare for and help out at major events;
  • Must be willing and able to work evenings and weekends as required;
  • Support the mission and goals of the organization across all programs and departments;
  • May assist with Capital Campaigns;
  • Perform all other work related duties as assigned by the Director of Development.

 

Qualifications

  • The position requires a post-secondary degree along with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in fund development, or equivalent professional designation and experience.
  • Membership in good standing with a professional organization/association such as the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) or Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP) would be an asset.
  • A demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategies for major gift solicitations as well as experience working with volunteers in a fundraising environment.
  • A personal passion for serving those in poverty, and a strong ability to communicate that passion to others
  • Superior interpersonal skills, presentation and public speaking skills, good listening and negotiation skills
  • An energetic self-starter who can work independently and within a dynamic and collaborative team environment
  • An ability to manage multiple projects and adhere to strict deadlines
  • Superior written and oral communications skills
  • Proven proficiency in MS Office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with online search tools
  • Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 

  • Full time, 35 hours per week; flexibility required for some evenings and weekend work
  • Office environment with frequent external meetings throughout the city
  • A valid Class 5 license and access to a vehicle is required
  • Driver’s abstract and Employment Security Check is required
