Interfaith Leaders Gather at 2010 World Religions Summit

Up to 100 religious leaders from diverse faiths including Christianity, Judaism, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Islam, Indigenous Spirituality and Shinto traditions gathered in Winnipeg on June 21-23, 2010. It was the first time Canada hosted the G8 Religious Leaders Summit which, for the past five years, has been organized to complement the meeting of G8 political leaders. Commissioner William W. Frances, Territorial Commander of The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda was co-chair of the event.

At the summit, from shared values, leaders were called on to take courageous and concrete actions that include:

Meeting the immediate needs of the most vulnerable while simultaneously making structural changes.
Closing the unacceptable growing gap between rich and poor.

Prioritizing long-term environmental sustainability and halting the harmful acceleration of climate change caused by us, while addressing its impacts on the poor.

Working for peace and removing factors that feed cycles of violent conflict and costly militarism.
