Conflict in Syria has led to millions of people being displaced, both within Syria and in neighbouring countries. In Canada, The Salvation Army is working with various levels of government and other community agencies to contribute to the resettlement process, and a fund has been established to support refugees overseas.

“The Salvation Army provides assistance to over 1.85 million people a year, including refugees and newcomers,” says Major Les Marshall, Territorial Public Relations & Development Secretary. “We are well-positioned to support individuals and families from Syria who may require support with basic necessities such as food and clothing.”

The intent of the Canadian government is to have refugees settle into permanent housing as quickly as possible. Local Salvation Army units are working with other community groups to assist with the settlement process. The Salvation Army has prepared a welcome package, which includes information on how immigrants/refugees can access our Community and Family Services, as well as receive clothing vouchers for use in Salvation Army Thrift Stores across the country.

The Salvation Army in Canada has also established a fund to support refugees overseas. This includes:

  • Emergency shelter to asylum seekers who have entered Italy via the Mediterranean Sea;
  • Hydration to refugees in Berlin while they wait for days to register with the German Government;
  • In partnership with The Salvation Army in Norway, will renovate a German kitchen and provide cookware to allow refugee women to cook and share meals together;
  • will support language development for refugee children to aid in their integration into German society
