Girl sells lemonade for Hamilton food bank

It’s a few minutes before the start of a Hamilton Tiger Cats game, and Grace DelFine is doing brisk business.

The seven-year-old is running a lemonade stand at her uncle Dave’s house across from Ivor Wynne Stadium. She’s already earned about $60.

But the money isn’t going in her pocket. Grace’s lemonade stand is benefiting the Salvation Army food bank.

Hamilton’s largest food bank put out a call earlier this month, saying it had a critical shortage of food. Grace heard it.

She saw a segment on TV about a girl who was raising money for the food bank. That inspired her.

Her smile is genuine as she sits behind the little wooden stand at the corner of Beechwood Avenue and Melrose Avenue North.

“It makes me feel good about myself,” she said. “Like I’m doing the right thing.”

A first grader at St. Daniel’s School on Anson Avenue, Grace has a simple life. She loves her dog and playing with her friends. She loves her 10-year-old brother, Luke.

She also has a huge capacity for empathy.

“She has a very big heart,” said Shannon, Grace’s mom. “She very much likes to share. Whenever a sad commercial comes on TV, she cries.

“She wants to give all the time. That’s Grace.”

Grace will continue her lemonade stand before Tiger Cats games throughout the summer. A glass of lemonade costs $1.
