Food Bank in Dire Need of Donations

KINGSTON – The local branch of the Salvation Army has had to temporarily close its food bank because it just couldn’t keep up with the demand.

“Last year, we were in a similar situation but not to the degree (of this year),” said Bonita McCourt, director of Community and Family Services.

“But this year, we had to resort to closing down the pantry. I don’t think we’ve ever done that in the history of our food bank.”

To help replenish its supplies, the Salvation Army is holding a “Fill a Truck” event on Friday and Saturday at the Loblaws in the Kingston Centre. Those interested in helping are asked to donate non-perishable food items.

There are a few reason supplies are particularly low at this time of year, McCourt said.
