Each month 850,000 Canadians access food banks and the numbers continue to increase. Hunger in Canada is a serious issue, but there are things we can do about it.

  1. 1.      Change what you know about hunger. You could start by clicking here. http://www.foodbankscanada.ca/Learn-About-Hunger/About-Hunger-in-Canada.aspx
  2. 2.      Meet your local food bank director and get to know how the food bank operates.
  3. 3.      Raise awareness of the issue of hunger with friends, families and coworkers.
  4. 4.      Support your local food bank by donating food or money and provide encouragement and affirmation.
  5. 5.      Share your thoughts about hunger on social platforms.

Salvation Army centres across the country have been operating community food banks for many years. And while client demand is increasing, donations are remaining relatively the same, making it challenging to help people in need.

Hunger doesn’t take a vacation. A report on Salvation Army food services (https://salvationarmy.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/SalvArmy_report_Foodbanks2012.pdf) states that over 60 percent of food banks reported an increase in clients and 30 percent reported a decrease in donations.

As summer turns to fall, The Salvation Army is hopeful that donations will match client demand ensuring that all who come for assistance will find their needs met.
