Did you know there are creative ways to support The Salvation Army? Ways where The Salvation Army, you and your loved ones all benefit at the same time?

These giving techniques are called “planned gifts.” In an effort to increase awareness of this option for supporting our work, and to provide helpful information as you discover the charitable gift that’s right for you, The Salvation Army has introduced a new section on our website. Visit www.salvationarmy.ca/wills to learn more.

The Salvation Army was one of the first charities in Canada to introduce planned giving opportunities to its supporters. Funds received through our Planned Giving Program play an important part in the Army’s ability to provide practical support, hope and dignity to vulnerable people in Canada and around the world.

The most common type of planned gift is still through a bequest in one’s will. By remembering a charity in your will, you gain the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping others while ensuring that your family’s needs are met. And, your estate benefits from tax relief.

There also are many other options available.

• In May 2006, the federal government eliminated capital gains tax on donations of appreciated publicly listed securities. This is proving to be an increasingly attractive option for donors and provides much needed immediate cash for charitable work.

• Life income gifts, such as charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts, allow donors to create a significant legacy for the future and receive income for life.

The Salvation Army offers these, and many other convenient ways for individuals planning their estate, or considering their investments, to take advantage of tax savings while helping the most disadvantaged people in our society. Careful estate and financial planning often results in donors being able to make gifts far larger than they ever thought possible.

Create your legacy. You may find that spending just a few minutes deciding the best way to make a gift can help meet your needs and your goals.
