Aboriginal Awareness Week, first introduced in 1992, is held on the four days that follow the Victoria Day long weekend and is a week to honour the many Aboriginal cultures in Canada.
Yet, while Canada celebrates the Aboriginal community and continues to learn about and understand its culture and history, reports continue to surface revealing the over abundance in aboriginal homelessness in all major hubs across the nation. A recent study highlighting Winnipeg’s homeless states that 60 per cent of Winnipeg’s homeless are of aboriginal descent.
Like anybody else, Aboriginal people come to cities with dreams and hopes. If they don’t get support or have the supports in place before moving into the city, then they can easily fall through the cracks – as we see through homelessness.
