At a time when Salvation Army Thrift Stores need it most, a clothing drive at Mic Mac Mall in Dartmouth, N.S., is producing incredible returns, helping replenish critically low clothing supplies.

The Big Scale Summer Sale promotion began on Thursday, July 19, and encourages Mic Mac Mall patrons to bring gently used clothing to the Dartmouth shopping complex. The donation is weighed and the patron is awarded mall gift cards based on the weight of the donation, as well as being entered in an additional draw for a $500 summer wardrobe.

Thus far, the Big Scale Big Sale has emerged as one of Mic Mac Mall’s most supported initiatives ever. Over 500 donations, totalling more than 13,000 pounds of clothing, have been collected during the promotion. Initially, Mic Mac Mall had allotted $3,000 worth of gift cards for the promotion, but by the half-way point of the 11-day promotion triple that original amount have been distributed. The sale runs through Sunday, July 29.

“Mic Mac Mall was delighted to partner with The Salvation Army on our ‘donate look great’ promotion during our Big Scale Summer Sale,” says Rebecca Logan, Marketing Director for Mic Mac Mall. “Hearing that donations have been decreasing over the past couple of months to the local Thrift Stores, we thought that developing this advertising campaign with the charitable connection seemed like the perfect solution to not only raise awareness for the need of donations but also jumpstart the replenishment process. Involving ourselves with organizations like The Salvation Army is just another way that we can give back to our community.”

The drive comes on the heels of The Salvation Army’s urgent call for clothing just two weeks ago. At that time, the six Thrift Store locations in HRM were experiencing unprecedented shortages of quality clothing donations.

The community has responded to that call to action with a tremendous show of support, however, there is still more work to be done as the Thrift Stores gear up for one of their highest volume times of the year: back-to-school season.

“The Salvation Army is immensely grateful to Mic Mac Mall for organizing such a hugely successful clothing collection event to help support our work within the community,” says Barb Warren, District Manager for The Salvation Army Thrift Stores.

“The donations collected by the mall will absolutely make a difference in our ability to meet the high demand from those in need, especially as we head into August when families start to get their children ready for the new school year. This is a wonderful win-win event that has managed to rally members of the community to do their part and to give what they can to help those less fortunate.”

Visit Mic Mac Mall now through July 29 to make a donation and witness the growing mountain of clothing, rising up from the Mic Mac Lounge.
