With an estimated 165,000 nonprofits and charities in Canada, why do people give to The Salvation Army? One man tells his story.

In East Asia Robert* grew up in a well-to-do family. His father, a master baker, owned a successful business in a thriving area of town. But when corruption eroded in the community, Robert’s dad lost his business and all his money.

Poverty quickly became a harsh reality for the family. There was no food in the refrigerator or the cupboard, and their financial future was uncertain. A teen at the time, Robert recalls his mom bringing home much-needed food items from The Salvation Army.

“The Salvation Army helped my family through one of our most difficult life challenges,” says Robert. “For that, I am forever grateful.”

Robert went on to become a prosperous international trader. Inspired by The Salvation Army and its mission to come alongside and give hope to people in need, Robert, for many years, has been a generous donor to its programs and services.

And for Robert, donating isn’t just about the warm feeling he gets inside. It’s important to him that funds are used in an effective, efficient and ethical manner. “The bulk of my donation pays for actual services and not steep administrative costs,” says Robert. “That makes me feel good.”

The Salvation Army is thankful for people like Robert whose critical support helps people in his community weather the crises in their lives and, rather than just giving them a hand out, nurtures their capacities, skills and strengths.
