1,000 donuts, 1,000 smiles, and a day of sunshine… that’s what we call a successful Donut Day! Situated in historic Fort Edmonton Park, The Salvation Army set up on the train platform and greeted visitors of the park with smiles and free donuts to celebrate 120 years in Edmonton. Serving donuts also commemorates a Salvation Army tradition dating back to 1917, during the First World War when Salvation Army volunteers made donuts to boost morale of troops on the front lines.

The backdrop had all the reminiscent elements from days of old; a 1919 Baldwin Steam Train, the 1920 Midway including the beautifully restored carousel and ferris wheel…not to mention the first Salvation Army building, and the historic reproduction of the church that The Salvation Army used before moving into their own building.  As visitors explored the park, The Salvation Army was there to serve up the sweet treats to young and old alike – a gesture of appreciation to the city of Edmonton for 120 years of support!

Our thanks to Fort Edmonton Park for helping to make Donut Day a huge success, and a summer favourite appreciation event for The Salvation Army.
