On Thursday, July 4th, Colonels Mark and Sharon Tillsley arrived in Calgary, Alberta to tour some of the areas that were hit by the flood waters.

The city of Calgary evacuated over 100,000 people due to flooding and suffered significant damage to the downtown core, there was growing concern that the 101st Calgary Stampede would not happen. However, countless volunteers and city workers worked tirelessly so that the city streets and the Stampede grounds would be ready.

The Tillsleys joined our Divisional Leaders, Majors Ron and Donna Millar, and The Salvation Army Glenmore Temple band on Friday, July 5th as we took part in the parade celebrating the 101st Stampede. The Salvation Army band is the longest serving band in the Stampede parade, and for the past 99 years we have proclaimed the message of Hope to those who have gathered.

The Tillsleys visited the Centre of Hope in Calgary to survey the damage caused by the flooding and then on Saturday, and also travelled to High River where they visited our Corps, Family Services and Thrift Store to witness first-hand the devastation. They greeted the workers who were assisting with the clean-up and offered a word of encouragement to residents cleaning out homes and salvaging what they could of their belongings.

On Saturday evening the Glenmore Temple Band and Choir presented a concert with the theme, “In Joyful Service”, followed by an update and photos on the work The Salvation Army has been doing with regard to flood relief, by Captain Pam Goodyear, Divisional Secretary for Public Relations & Development.
