There was a huge turnout for the store opening with long line-ups of happy customers at the cash registers. On Wednesday, July 18, 11 teens ranging from ages 14 to 16 spent the day volunteering at the Mississauga Thrift Store. But these are no ordinary group of kids, the young volunteers are participants in the Windsor Salt C2C Peace Bus Project which involves a cross-Canada mission to educate and inspire action among Canadians for peace. Donations of household items and clothing are down by an estimated 50 per cent this summer, compared to last year at this time at the Salvation Army’s thrift stores in Abbotsford and Mission. Spokesperson Deb Lowell said this decrease means the agency is not only having difficulty providing supplies to people for whom it finds housing, but less money is coming in from the sale of these items in the thrift stores.
