Salvation Army Pastor and Chair of the Army’s Advisory Board Receive Newfoundland’s Highest Honour

Major Gladys Osmond, retired Salvation Army pastor and John Perlin, chair of The Salvation Army’s Advisory Board in St. John’s, N.L, were among nine Newfoundlanders to receive the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador at Government House last week.

The Order is the province’s highest honour that recognizes individuals who demonstrate excellence and achievement in their field and have made a lasting contribution to the province.

Major Osmond, who lives in Springdale, was honoured for her work to boost Canadian Forces soldiers’ morale.

The former teacher and Salvation Army clergy has been sending them thousands of letters a year since she retired two decades ago.

“She is an outstanding example of the Newfoundland and Labrador spirit of service before self,” said Premier Danny Williams.

John Perlin received the order for his work with more than 50 charitable organizations and national and community groups such as Wildlife Habitat Canada, The Fluvarium, The Vera Perlin Society and The Royal St. John’s Regatta.

”(His) lifelong legacy of community and charitable service is absolutely formidable,” Williams said.

“He has touched the lives of literally hundreds of thousands of our people.”

The inductees were chosen by an advisory council from a group of 133 nominees.

Newfoundland Women’s Camp 2008

During the weekends of May 23-25 and May 30-June 1, 400 ladies attended Twin Ponds Camp in the NL West Division.

The guest for the weekend was Commissioner Marilyn D. Francis.

The theme was “Recapture the Wonder!” This was vividly presented through the Word. The Commissioner challenged the women to recapture the wonder of the world around, within and above us.

The theme was captivated through the decorations….twinkling lights, stars, centerpieces, etc. It continued throughout the weekend with cabin devotions, “The Wonder of Womanhood”; Exercise, “The Wonder of the Human Body”; and scrapbooking, “The Wonder of Relationships”.

A highlight of Saturday afternoon was a Prayer Concert (The Wonder of Prayer). God’s spirit was very evident with one lady seeking Salvation.

The Saturday evening dinner recaptured the wonder of Christmas with an elaborate display of Christmas decorations and a visit from Santa Claus. Gifts were distributed. A special feature was Commissioner Marilyn singing :”It’s the most WONDERFUL time of the year” and “Winter WONDERLAND”.

This was followed by a fun time entitled “Once Upon a Time”. The wonder of childhood was displayed with the ladies dressed as children, Divisional Headquarters staff dressed as fairies and Commissioner as Cinderella. She challenged the ladies to follow their dreams!

The worship services were God filled with powerful sermons and many responding at the altar…recapturing the WONDER of God’s power in their lives.
