STARBUCK, MB – Just after sunrise on this beautiful late summer morning, golfers assembled at Bridges Golf Course near Starbuck for The Salvation Army's 10th Annual Manitoba Golf Classic presented by Supreme Steel.  After a tasty continental breakfast, blessings and a warm welcome from Major Rob Kerr, The Salvation Army's Divisional Secretary for Public Relations and Development, the participants made their way out onto the course for a day of fun and fellowship.

Enjoying a nearly perfect day for golf with a hint of a breeze and comfortable temperatures, the golfers spent the morning playing a Texas Scramble, with the "best ball" format levelling the playing field between the duffers and scratch golfers.  Among the golfers were three local celebrities: Shawn Churchill, CTV Winnipeg Sports Director; Beau, co-host of "The Breakfast Club with Beau & Heather on 99.9 BOB FM;" and Daniel Burkett, the 2014 Formula Atlantic auto racing champion.

Overheard among the golfers were comments such as, "it's good to be here and it's for a great cause.  We wouldn't miss it!"

After playing through all 18 holes, golfers were treated to a fabulous lunch served by the Bridges clubhouse, Major Shawn Critch, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army, gave a brief overview of the work of The Salvation Army in Manitoba and then turned the mic over to professional auctioneer Les Kletke, who entertained the crowd while auctioning off prizes including a return trip for two from WestJet, Grey Cup 2015 tickets, a Winnipeg Jets package including a signed jersey, tickets to a Janet Jackson show in the Scotiabank suite, and the opportunity to sponsor a new scoreboard for The Salvation Army's gang outreach program.  Thanks to generous donations from Sally Leder of Supreme Group and Mid-Town Ford Sales, a new and functioning scoreboard will be installed in the gym at The Salvation Army Weetamah in the core area of Winnipeg, where members of rival gangs are brought together in the spirit of sports competition and given an opportunity to find practical support for gang exit and reintegration into society.

Further benevolence was shown by Sobering Investments and Basar Heating and A/C by means of generous donations toward the purchase of a pool table for The Salvation Army's Haven Residential Facility, a licensed mental health program for adult males transitioning back into community living.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors, golfers and volunteers for coming together to help us help others. Together we were able to raise nearly $50,000 in support of The Salvation Army's programs province-wide.

Mark your calendar for next year, August 25, 2016 to be a part of the fun!
