Winnipeg, MB – As the last strains of music fade out, the crowd at 17th Wing Theatre erupts with thunderous applause. The ovation is for Kailey, and her rendition of “Birthday” as originally performed by Katy Perry. After acknowledging the crowd, she is lead off stage by Hannah, the host of this year’s festivities.

On Friday, May 15, 2015, 52 members of The Salvation Army Community Venture program competed in the finale of CV Idol 2015, a singing competition that has become the highlight of the year for many involved with the program. The field was narrowed down from the nearly one hundred individuals who attended one of the five audition dates to this handful of talented people.

When asked how CV Idol got started, Community Venture Executive Director Kim Park explains, “As you can tell, our members love to perform! In 2009, we started using the 17th Wing theatre – we wanted the performers to have the opportunity to showcase their talents on a real stage. Over the years, it has kept growing with more and more people requesting to audition, even from outside of Winnipeg!”

Just like the television “Idol” shows, the contestants perform in turn before of a panel of celebrity judges. The judging panel this year consisted of CV Coordinators Crystal, Jeremy, Colin, Cheryl and Tracey.

Kailey, the winner of second place in the “A” Division, says she chose the Katy Perry hit because “I like it, it’s me. It’s about being colourful and excited and it’s popular and I like it.”

Channelling Perry’s signature outrageous fashion and vocal style, she wowed the audience and the judges with her performance, earning her prize. To what does she attribute her success? “You try your best, you work hard and have a good time.”

While everyone was a winner to their family, fans and the CV staff, the prize winners were:

    A Division:
    1st Place – Michael
    2nd Place – Kailey
    3rd Place – Steven

    B Division:
    1st Place – Heather
    2nd Place – Alison
    3rd Place – Kelsey

    C Division:
    1st Place – Brett
    2nd Place – Mary Jane
    3rd Place – Margaret
