WINNIPEG, MB – On Saturday, January 24, the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s and Men’s basketball teams both won hard-fought victories over the Brandon University Bobcats, 67-58 and 80-63 respectively.

For men and women living with disabilities in Winnipeg, the bigger win came in the form of fundraising support from the Wesmen and their fans.

Ticket revenues, funds from the 50/50 draws, and proceeds from head-to-head hoops battles between Chris Greaves and Brett Carter of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were generously donated to Community Venture, an organization, administered by The Salvation Army, devoted to supporting adults living with disabilities through day programs, outreach and residential settings. Care is provided daily throughout the year to over 160 women and men aged 21-84.

The common thread between Community Venture and the Wesmen in this fundraiser is Stephanie Kleysen, a student-athlete that has worked for and volunteered with the social program for two years and is currently in her fifth year with the Wesmen.

When asked about her motivation, she explained, “I had it in my head that I wanted to do a fundraiser. I had been working with Community Venture for the past two summers and I thought this was a great idea to give back because they had given so much to me and enlightened my outlook on life.”

The funds raised will go directly to assist Community Venture and the CV members who rely on the social program for their daily support needs.
