WINNIPEG, MB – The T.A.S.K. Program, at The Salvation Army Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre received a Nourishing Potential Grant from the Winnipeg Foundation for September 2014 thru June 2015. The grant, in the amount of $3,140.00 will provide food and training opportunities.

T.A.S.K. (Together After School for Kids) is a no-cost healthy food program, offered to children 7 – 12 years of age, to have fun learning the importance of health. Kids explore various ways to make healthier choices through games, activities, group discussions, and involvement with the preparation of healthy foods.

Providing children a safe after-school environment and an opportunity to develop healthy eating habits and essential life skills, T.A.S.K. offers:

    • A no-cost program that provides children the opportunity to participate in the preparation of healthy food.
    • Essential Team-building principles within a multicultural setting.
    • Group discussions focused on important health issues.

The T.A.S.K. Program operates September through June, every Monday evening, from 4 pm to 6 pm at BMFRC located at 51 Morrow Avenue, in Winnipeg. Parental Permission Forms are obtained from each participant. Thanks to the assistance from The Winnipeg Foundation, we anticipate participation to grow to 50 children for the 2014/15 season.

Recipes selected for the children to prepare must contain a minimum of three of the four food groups as outlined in the Canada Food Guide. A discussion is held each night about the importance of following the Canada Food Guide and children are asked to identify and name how many food groups were used in the recipe that they prepared for the evening. The rich, cultural diversity of our participants provides us the opportunity to invite the children to bring family recipes from home. The Family Life Coordinator makes every effort to incorporate these recipes into a future night’s menu. In some cases, the Mom/Dad is invited to discuss the cultural significance of the recipe and assist the children with the preparation.
