A question of dignity

Winnipeg, MB – What does dignity mean to you?  This was the question presented at our recent Dignity Mannequin exhibits at Winnipeg Square and Polo Park Shopping Centre.  During the May 17 and 18 exhibit, 10 mannequins provided a visual story of dignity while prompting passersby to consider the question “What does dignity mean?”

Mannequin-face“Initial reaction to the exhibit was that of curiosity. This reaction turned to quiet surprise and a new understanding as people learned what it represented,” said Tsungai Muvingi, Event Coordinator for The Salvation Army Prairie Division. “The neatest and perhaps most surprising reaction by people was that most everyone shared the same needs and definitions regarding dignity. The only difference was whether or not those needs were met.”

During the exhibit, a gentleman shared his story of how The Salvation Army was there for him during a tough time in his life. He had been turned away by quite a few places. Others even looked down on him because he was a divorcee. In his own words he said, “The Salvation Army accepted me as I was and helped me through my struggles.” He is once again standing on his own two feet and recognizes the dignity in himself.

“Everyone wants a safe place to sleep, a warm meal, clothes, respect and a meaningful way to contribute to society,” explains Muvingi. “By encouraging people to look under the surface, we help to build an amazing community.”

The Dignity Mannequin exhibit will continue telling the story of dignity in our community through regular appearances at Salvation Army events.  The Dignity Mannequins, while not being exhibit, are stationed at the programs that created them.  This serves as reminder to staff, clients and guests of The Salvation Army that though dignity comes from within, it is maintained and strengthened with the help of a connected and caring community.
