On Thursday September 4, 2014, The Salvation Army Hamilton Booth Centre celebrated the end of summer with a BBQ lunch. The BBQ was attended by 125 men and women who enjoyed chicken, corn on the cob, baked potatoes and homemade apple pie. Executive Director Lieut.-Colonel David Hiscock and the shelter management team joined with the kitchen staff to serve those attending the meal, offering food and a kind word to everyone passing through the line. They shared in conversation and laughter throughout the lunch time gathering.

“A BBQ meal is a common experience for many, but for the community we serve it is a seldom enjoyed event and breaks up the monotonous daily routine” said Lieut.-Colonel Hiscock, “It becomes a time to celebrate life around a tasty meal prepared by Chef Gary and the team. Everyone is so thankful.”

The BBQ was just one of many celebratory meals held by The Hamilton Booth Centre this year. These celebrations have become almost a monthly occurrence to commemorate various holidays, including Christmas, Thanksgiving, Canada Day, Victoria Day and Easter. These events generally see upwards of 140 people in attendance. The popularity has been growing as it offers something unique and out of the ordinary to the many people The Booth Centre serves everyday.

Following the Victoria Day steak BBQ, a client expressed his thanks to Lieut.-Colonel Hiscock saying, “This is the first steak I have eaten in a long long time. Thank you for treating me and making me feel like a real human being.”

“And that” replied Lieut.-Colonel Hiscock, “makes it all worthwhile.”
