At a recent meeting of the Sun Parlour Retirees Amateur Radio Club in Windsor, Perron Goodyear, Divisional Director of Emergency & Disaster Services for Ontario Great Lakes, was asked to make a presentation on The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services and SATERN (Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network). Members of the club were very excited to learn more about this valuable ministry and expressed interest in becoming members of SATERN.

In addition the club unanimously agreed to be a SATERN Affiliated Club. The criterion for being designated as a SATERN Affiliated Club is that the club agrees to support The Salvation Army and assist with communications during an emergency. Sun Parlour also agreed to allow The Salvation Army to utilize their already established radio room, just blocks for the Windsor Community & Rehabilitation Centre, using new call sign VA3WSA.

“We are very excited about this newly formed partnership with the Sun Parlour Retirees Amateur Radio Club”, said Perron Goodyear. “Amateur Radio is a valuable asset to The Salvation Army during times of crisis when other forms of communication can be damaged or destroyed. While we pray we never need them, their support of our EDS ministry ensures that vital supports are available when they are needed most.”

SATERN provides emergency communication support to The Salvation Army and other emergency or disaster responders wherever needed.

The purpose of SATERN is to acquire and train personnel skilled in emergency communications and message handling, who will support Salvation Army operations in local, regional/Divisional, national and international disaster situations.
