For all of us, the past year has been different in many ways, but the light of generosity remained strong. This winter, many were left with challenging situations because of COVID-19, yet it has been because of the generosity of the community that basic necessities and security were made possible. Even in such an unprecedented year, so much joy was shared with many individuals and families in need and we see this continued enthusiasm carry into a new year.

When we think of the various needs in our community, what comes to mind most often is food and shelter. However, the reality of basic necessities is an incredibly wide net and inclusive of diverse emotional and spiritual support. It is because of so many generous contributions that The Salvation Army is able to share the hope that’s needed for each person in every unique situation.

As we move into the second month of the year, physical distancing remains important in keeping each other safe. Surprisingly, staying apart has also offered a unique sense of gratitude behind the mask.

In order to continue to meet the growing needs of the community while also following health and safety guidelines, online communications have become a major focus for staff, workers, and also for those looking for support. For example, over Christmas, applications for food and toys moved online. This new and innovative approach to digitally register for assistance has helped make accessing services easier for many. Once applications were completed, incredible volunteer workers facilitated curbside pickups at food and toy locations. COVID-19 restrictions have posed challenges, but we are all finding ways to connect and share joy, and we see this radiating throughout the year ahead.
