Donating to charity is one of the most meaningful acts a person can take.

Every year, more than 24 million Canadians donate to those in need because they care about their fellow citizens. But with 160,000 charities and non-profit organizations, how does one decide where to direct their money?

Canadian author and sociologist, Anne-Marie Ambert, has donated to charity for decades. One of the organizations she donates to is The Salvation Army. Recently, SalvationArmy.ca spoke with her about why she chooses to support The Salvation Army.

1.      When did you first get involved with The Salvation Army?

I’ve been donating to The Salvation Army for more than 10 years.

2.      What attracted you to The Salvation Army?

The Salvation Army’s mission is to give hope to Canada’s most vulnerable.

3.      Why does The Salvation Army’s mission matter?

I’ve studied poverty throughout the years. It does terrible things to families and deprives them of opportunities. At least 25% of children who grow up in poverty will become poor adults themselves. Poverty is a vicious cycle and people in poverty need help.

4.      What motivates you to stay involved?

I feel it is important that donors step in to fill in the gaps that our government leaves in the care of the poor and the prevention of poverty.

5.      How do you describe The Salvation Army to others?

They set an example, their message is good and they do good work.

6.      Why do you choose to support The Salvation Army?

Most of the money given to The Salvation Army (86 cents of every dollar) goes directly to the cause. For me that’s important.

7.      Why have you included The Salvation Army in your will?

I want to leave a legacy that upholds my values. I want to feel I am changing someone’s life and  The Salvation Army has proven that their programs work.

8.      What would you say to someone who is thinking about donating?

Do your research. Is your donation going directly to the targeted group? If not, forget about it.

Canadians count on The Salvation Army for a reason. We offer practical assistance for children and families, often tending to the basic necessities of life, provide shelter for homeless people and rehabilitate people who have lost control of their lives to an addiction.

When you give to The Salvation Army, you are investing in the future of marginalized and overlooked people in your community. This is one of the most meaningful acts a person can take.
