OTTAWA, March 22, 2012 /CNW/ – Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada Local 73100 have accepted The Salvation Army’s offer to proceed with binding arbitration as a means to resolve a labour dispute that began on January 6th, 2012. The Salvation Army and PSAC officials developed a return to work protocol resulting in employees returning to work this morning as of 8:00 am. today.
“The Salvation Army is pleased that the striking workers have accepted our offer to proceed with arbitration and return to work,” said Michael Maidment, spokesperson for The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army continued to deliver all services and programs without disruption at the 168 bed emergency men’s shelter during the 10 week long strike. A review conducted by the City of Ottawa social services department on February 10, 2012 confirmed that all aspects of program delivery required under contract with the City of Ottawa were being fully met. Further, a City of Ottawa Health Inspection completed on February 29, 2012 determined that there were no deficiencies at the shelter.
A timeline for the arbitration process has yet to be determined.
