The Salvation Army Continues to Care for those Displaced by Wellesley Street Blaze

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Toronto, ON – September 29, 2010 – On September 24, 2010, just before 5:00pm a six-alarm blaze broke out on the 24th floor in a highrise on Wellesley Street and quickly spread to adjacent floors. The Salvation Army responded rapidly and arrived on scene within an hour to provide nutrition and hydration relief to first responders and evacuees.

The Salvation Army continues to provide care and support to those who have been displaced and are in temporary shelters. To date The Salvation Army has provided over 1,200 meals and The Salvation Army Thrift Stores have provided vouchers to assist 300 individuals with clothing and basic necessities.

“The Salvation Army’s mission is to provide for those who are in great need during these difficult days of not having the comfort of their homes”, said Captain John Murray, Spokesperson for The Salvation Army. “We will continue to provide compassionate care to the vulnerable of this community as we bring hope and dignity to those displaced by this fire.”

Further Salvation Army Emergency and Disaster Services personnel, volunteers and support personnel have been on-site and continue to assist where needed.

The Salvation Army continues to monitor the situation and is working in cooperation with local emergency personnel and City of Toronto officials.
