Doc Hendley founder and president of  non-profit Wine to Water, visited Halifax to support The Salvation Army at its fifth annual Hope in the City Leadership Breakfast. The event drew over 300 business people to the Halifax World Trade and Convention Centre, for a morning of networking, entertainment and education about the work The Salvation Army is doing in Halifax.

While bartending in North Carolina Doc Hendley originally intended to fundraise money in support of the world’s fresh water crisis. However, he ended up organizing several wine tastings, and then bringing the funds himself to war torn Darfur, Sudan. In Darfur, Doc saw the government using scarce water sources as a means of extermination by damaging the wells, thereby removing a fresh water source. Through outsourcing the work to locals Doc quickly realized that the wells could be repaired for only $50 each, saving thousands of people.

“My efforts are going to be a drop in the bucket, but if I had never taken that step because it was too big a problem, then we wouldn’t be anywhere right now,” said Doc.

Doc currently has projects running in nine different countries around the world, and is responsible for saving thousands of lives by providing access to a resource many so often take for granted, water. He has also written the book Wine To Water, which shares his quest of creating his non-profit organization.

“What a wonderful morning to celebrate our Hope in the City Leadership Breakfast,” says Major Alison Cowling, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army.  “Doc Hendley has delivered a speech to inspire action globally and in our own community.  With your support, you are helping us continue to provide the basic necessities of life –clothing, food and shelter– to those in need.”

The event also featured CTV Atlantic news anchor Steve Murphy as emcee.
