The Salvation Army in northeastern Nova Scotia recently held its annual Red Shield fundraiser in Pictou, raising over $5,000 to help people in need in the region.

Held at Pictou Lodge, the event featured Alain Bosse, The Kilted Chef, who emceed the live competition. Competitors Chefs Gilles Godin, Paul Heighton, Rob Vinton and Thomas Carey faced off in an Iron Chef style competition, to see who reigned supreme. The participants had to create a delicious meal using local mystery ingredients, double smoked bacon, Mrs. MacGregor’s Oatcakes, asparagus and lobster. The chefs cooked as the live auction took place, and The Kilted Chef educated the audience about the benefits of supporting local merchants and initiatives. Pictou Lodge 2

“I am happy to support The Salvation Army and the incredible work that they are doing in this community,” says Chef Alain Bosse. “Next year I hope to make it even bigger and better.”
Judges Ann McGregor, of ECFM; recording artist, Dave Gunning; and musician, John Spyder MacDonald scored the dishes as the audience enjoyed appetizers and a silent auction. The evening ended with Pictou Lodge Chef, Thomas Carey being crowned as the champion for his Lobster Gnocchi dish.

“Our Red Shield kick off was once again a fantastic event that helped raise critical funds for the work we do in northeastern Nova Scotia,” said Captain Dolores Abbott, Director of Community Ministries. “We would like to thank our partners, and members of the community who came out to ensure the continued success of this event.”

The funds raised will stay in the community and assist with practical needs like food, clothing and shelter, year-round. Some services offered in the area include Christmas support hampers, sending kids to camp and supporting those in times of crises through Emergency Disaster Services.
