This is a guest post by Lieutenant Joyce Downer–passionately serving the community of Kentville alongside her husband Lieutenant Josh Downer. They are also the proud parents of two young children.

More than 150 people showed up on April 4, for the Easter egg hunt at the Kentville Community Church (KCC). Families came out to enjoy food, games, crafts, and a colouring contest. Though the event didn’t start until 10:00 a.m. families lined up in anticipation since 9:15 a.m.

The Salvation Army is usually well known for helping families at Christmastime, recognizing that the expense of the holiday is difficult for families on a fixed or low income. At the KCC we saw an opportunity to help during the Easter season, when many families may struggle financially. We used our Easter event to not only meet this need, but to also create a space for a sense of community to happen in our town, and in our neighbourhood. We wanted to provide a place for families to gather in a fun and comfortable environment. It is important to us that our church be a place where people can meet. It was exciting to see people socialize after the egg hunt, and share in conversation together.

Though it was a rainy and wet morning, we were thrilled with the turnout. Our congregation came together to plan and execute the event, making our first Community Easter Egg Hunt a true team effort!

Our mission at The Salvation Army is to share the love of Jesus Christ, to meet human need, and to be a transforming influence in our community. We believe this event achieved all of these things, and was also a lot of fun. Due to the positive response, we are planning for over 200 children next year.
