Moms and tots trudged through the snow on a dreary Tuesday to spend the morning connecting with those gathered at the Precious Moments playgroup in Dartmouth, N.S. The Salvation Army Dartmouth Community and Family Resources recently moved into their new space at 171 Main Street. The facility is set up with play mats and toys with large windows overlooking Main Street. The tables are laden with snacks and craft supplies for that day’s craft: sun catchers made with tiny pieces of colored tissue paper. Kelly Currie, Community Services Coordinator, does her best to mix play-time with new learning initiatives.

“A Car Seat Safety Specialist is coming in this month to show the moms how to properly install their child’s car seats,” says Currie. “A lot of the moms don’t drive so they’re not as confident, and more nervous, about putting car seats in taxis. In March, we have a dental hygienist coming in to tell the kids a story, and to talk to everyone about proper dental care. Another one of our special guests will be a police officer, to discuss bullying. In May, I have a special surprise for the moms for Mother’s Day. We try to make it fun for everyone.”

These sessions provide an outlet for the children to learn, and provide a forum for the mothers to discuss childrearing techniques and safety concerns. For some moms, the playgroup offers a safe place for children to learn how to socialize and play with other children. Celeste has dealt with some difficulties with her daughter Phoenix since birth, and the playgroup has been a consistent source of support.

“Phoenix has been sensory sensitive since she was born,” says Celesete. “She seemed to get very upset by too much noise. I couldn’t take her anywhere for any length of time, because she would cry and scream and cover her ears. I’ve been attending Precious Moments since Phoenix was two months old. Coming here has helped her to learn how to socialize. She recognises a lot of the same people from week to week, and I’m able to provide music for her when she becomes overwhelmed.”

Precious Moments provides free play, crafts, snacks and learning and is open every Tuesday from 10 – 11a.m.
